ROP occurs in premature infants who are born before the retinal vessels complete their normal growth.
Multiple risk factors play a role due to which abnormal blood vessels start forming, which can initially distort and later even detach the retina.
Such infants who are at risk need to be screened early to identify the disease early and provide ROP treatment to stop the ongoing damage at the earliest stage.
Risk factors for ROP are
Within 28 days of baby’s birth, if the baby is less than 3-4 weeks old and within 2-3 weeks if the age is less than 28 weeks.
This disease cannot be identified by parents or paediatrician. The baby falling in the screening category has to be screened by a Retina specialist to evaluate the absence/ presence and extent/ severity of the disease.
The ROP treatment depends on the stage of the disease. It is treated either with Laser, Intravitreal injections, both, and Vitreoretinal surgery.
